WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR

The work involves the responsibility of operating and maintaining either a facility for employing the activated sludge process, or any similar process, including all modifications of a facility employing any biological, physical, or chemical treatment process other than activated sludge and the stabilization or oxidation pond processes depending on the municipality's plant type. Work is performed under the general supervision of a supervisor to ensure that the work meets standards. Does related work as required.

DUTIES:

Oversees the operation of a wastewater treatment plant to assure the most economical and efficient use of equipment and supplies on an assigned shift.

Operates incinerator, controlling feed rate, draft, temperature, shaft speed, ash removal and emissions. Performs laboratory tests for control of plant operations. Records readings of meters and gauges. Maintains inventory of bulk chemicals and other plant supplies. Monitors sludge deliveries from other municipalities. Starts and stops pumps, motors, air compressors, and related machinery and equipment. Makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment. Treats and disposes of sludge. Takes sample of sewage for testing.

Performs custodial duties in connection with the cleaning and maintenance of plant buildings and grounds. Keeps a log of plant operations and related records.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:

Good knowledge of the principles and practices involved in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant; good knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal; working knowledge of the tools, equipment and terminology used in the maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment systems; ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters; ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of plant operations; ability to follow oral and written directions; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; mechanical aptitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Possession of a high school diploma or its equivalency. Must possess and maintain a valid NYS driver’s license as a term and condition of employment.

Special Requirement:

Applicants must possess a NYSDEC Grade 2 Wastewater Operators certification

SALARY:

$20 – 25 per hour, commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Village of Saugerties is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Wastewater Superintendent. The chosen candidate will be responsible for planning, coordinating and directing overall compliance, operations, maintenance and department management at the Sewage Treatment Plant. Qualifications

Duties

Oversees 5 Employees including scheduling, directing, delegating and managing.

Makes operating decisions. Operates treatment facilities to control flow and processing of wastewater, sludge and effluent. Monitors gauges, meters and control panels. Observes variations in operating conditions, interprets meter and gauge readings and laboratory test results to determine processing requirements.

Extracts samples and performs routine laboratory analyses. Requisition’s chemical and supplies. Performs some routine maintenance functions.

Administers a preventative maintenance program.

Prepares reports including, SPDES Operating reports, industrial surcharges, sewer districts, septic hauler charges and others.

Preparing an annual budget, writing purchase orders, financial tracking.

Planning for capital improvements.

In addition, the candidate should have the ability to lift heavy materials, be willing to respond to water / wastewater emergencies at all hours and be willing to work in all weather conditions.

Salary

Annual salary will be $62,00 to $68,000 based on qualifications and experience.

The City of Auburn, NY is seeking a qualified candidate to fill the full-time position of Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator 2. This appointment will be made provisionally. The appointee will be required to apply for and take the Civil Service exam scheduled for August 7, 2021. The appointment will only become permanent upon successful completion of the exam as one of the top three (3) candidates.

This position involves responsibility on an assigned shift for the efficient operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant employing the activated sludge process. This position verifies chemical testing and evaluating parameters pertaining to the operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment plant and the industrial waste pretreatment program.

Work is performed under supervision of a higher-level employee in accordance with established policy with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment in planning and carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is exercised over Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Trainees and Attendants.

Does related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

(A) an “Approved Associate in Applied Science” (A.A.S) from a duly accredited university or school in one of the following curriculums approved by the NYSDEC:

1. Ecology and Environmental Technology from Paul Smith College 2. Water Quality Monitoring form Ulster County Community College 3. Environmental Technology for SUNY- Morrisville 4. Water/Wastewater Technology form Crowder College

(B) an Associates in Applied Science (A.A.S) degree from a duly accredited university or school plus eighteen (18 months of operating experience at a wastewater treatment plant (An associates of Arts (AA) degree with 30 credit hours of math or science is considered equivalent of A.A.S Degree) or

(C) a high school diploma or High School Equivalency diploma and three years of operating experience at a wastewater treatment plant.

(D) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) and (C) above.

Possession of a current Grade 3-A or Grade 4-AWastewater Treatment Plant Operator certificate issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation.

SALARY:  Salary is determined by union contract, $48,734 - $71,689

The Elmira Water Board seeks candidates for the position of Maintenance Superintendent.  This is an exempt, salaried, tested position in the Competitive Class of the Chemung County/City of Elmira Regional Civil Service Classification and follows Civil Service protocol.

 

Some distinguishing features of the class are as follows:  This is important supervisory work involving responsibility for overseeing the installation and repair of water mains, valves, hydrants, and main-to-curb service installations.  Work is performed in accordance with general policies prepared under the General Manager’s supervision but permitting considerable leeway for the exercise of independent judgment carrying out the details of the work.  This work is given close supervision in progress to insure compliance with appropriate specifications and instructions.  The Water Maintenance Superintendent must be available at all times to meet emergency situations.  Does related work as required.

 

Typical work activities:  (The following activities are listed as examples only and in no event shall an employee be limited to only those examples listed.)

 

Supervises the maintenance, repair and extension of the water distribution system which consists of mains, valves, hydrants, and services

 

Administrative tasks include budget preparation, verification of payroll, review of material and equipment requisitions, review inventory of materials such as hydrants, pipes, valves, fittings, tubing and backfill material

 

Supervises the investigation and repair of leaks, raising or lowering curb wells, permanent repairs to streets, roads, and alleys resulting from our excavations

 

Obtains necessary permits for work, directs the laying and tapping of mains and installation of new services

 

Supervises the maintenance, inspection, repair and relocation of fire hydrants

 

Reviews maps, installation records and computerized model of distribution system

 

Responds at all times to emergency repair calls, prepares and files reports on activities.

 

Full performance knowledge, skills, abilities and personal characteristics:

Good administrative skills, thorough knowledge of tools, equipment and terminology used in water distribution system construction, operation and maintenance; good knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as related to water distribution systems; ability to read and draft plans and sketches; ability to follow complex oral and written directions; initiative; resourcefulness; good judgment; approach work with cooperative team attitude; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

Minimum qualifications:

 

A         Graduation from a college or university recognized by the universities of the State of New York with a Bachelor’s Degree in civil engineering and one

(1) year of experience in the control of inventory, installation, maintenance and repair to the water distribution systems; or

 

B         Graduation from an accredited two (2) year college with an Associates Degree in engineering sciences, civil or architectural engineering technology and three (3) years of experience in civil engineering work, and (1) year of which shall have been in a responsible supervisory capacity; or

 

C         Graduation from a standard senior high school and five (5) years of experience in the control of inventory, installation, maintenance and repair to the water distribution systems, two (2) of which shall have been in a responsible supervisory capacity; or

 

D         An equivalent combination of training and experience as indicated in A, B, and C.
