Water Resources Planning and Mapping
NYRWA provides rural communities with a variety of water resource planning and mapping assistance. Many communities across New York are currently in the process of planning and developing a vision for their future. For most of these communities, conserving wetlands, waterbodies, stream corridors, and groundwater resources is essential. Protection of local aquifers and other subsurface water sources is especially critical in rural areas, where groundwater often provides all drinking water and also contributes a significant portion of water to local streams, wetlands, and ponds.
NYRWA’s Water Resources Planning Specialist, Steven Winkley (Winkley@nyruralwater.org), has helped many rural communities with inventorying and mapping their water resources. Included in NYRWA's water resource planning assistance is detailed mapping of aquifer boundaries, identification of other key water resource features, compilation of water well data, inventorying of public water systems, analysis of present and future land use, identification of potential sources of contamination, and development of water resource strategies. If a community is interested in protecting a particular source of drinking water, NYRWA also facilitates the development of wellhead protection plans.
