Description of Work (Illustrative Only):

The Water Maintenance Foreperson will supervise the installation, maintenance and repair of a water distribution system; this includes but is not limited to water mains, valves, hydrants, and service pipes to resident’s premises.

An incumbent of this class is considered a "working" foreman and must be available for duty at all times in case of emergency. Detailed instructions are given to lower-level water maintenance personnel and the work is closely supervised.

Examples of Work (Illustrative Only):

Leads and directs the laying, maintaining and tapping of water mains; Supervises the operation and repair of chlorine and other chemical feed pumps at  water treatment facilities; Reads and prepares plans or sketches of water systems and records and tracks changes therein into geographic information systems or other devices to reflect current water distribution system conditions and design; Requisitions materials and keeps inventory of water maintenance materials for hydrants, valves, meters, water mains and service lines from vendors and suppliers; Responds at all times to emergency repair jobs; Maintains all water recording and measuring instruments; Prepares required data, reports and notifications pertaining to the water distribution system for supervisor including records of time and materials; Conducts investigations of consumer complaints and provides resolution; Functions as a liaison to public and/or regulatory agencies during repairs and emergencies; Operates SCADA control systems to monitor  pump stations and makes adjustments as needed; Consults with the Water Superintendent or other supervisors on technical problems; May assist supervisors with cost estimates, project planning and budget preparation; May be assigned to read meters, as required; Uses computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, database and GIS software in performing work assignments.

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience:

Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and either: (a) three (3) years of experience where the primary function of the position was as a plumber or as a maintenance person in a water maintenance related field; or (b) three (3) years of experience where the primary function of the position was the operation, maintenance and/or repair of mechanical equipment related to water distribution systems (such as pumps, valves, pipes, hydrants, reservoirs, service pipes, etc.) Special Requirement:

•  Possession of a current Grade IIB certificate issued by the NYS Department of Health Department -and-

Maintenance Worker

Town of Greenport, NY (Columbia County) - Located 30 miles south of Albany, 30 miles north of Kingston and 28 miles west of Great Barrington, MA.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs semi-skilled work in carpentry, electrical, painting, masonry, plumbing, blacktopping and landscaping.

• Repairs and cleans windows, doors, floors at the Greenport Town Hall, Greenport Police Station, Greenport Community Center and Greenport Town Park.

• Performs preventative maintenance on furnaces, pumps, motors, doors, water systems, heaters, valves, fans, mowers and other grounds equipment.

• Baseball, softball and soccer field maintenance at Greenport Town Park.

Must prepare fields for games including cutting grass, preparing the infield and pitcher mound, lining the field and clearing water off the field after rain events.

• Assists private contractors in the installation and maintenance of a wide variety of fixtures and equipment.

• Operates all motorized equipment, chainsaws, weed eaters, tractors, skid steer and other grounds maintenance equipment as necessary.

• Assists in the removal of snow and ice from all parking lots, walkways and may assist the Town of Greenport Highway Department in snow removal during major snow events.

• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Willing to work all shifts including weekends, holidays, evenings, and 24-hour emergency on call.

• Must be 18 years old.

This position is responsible for providing a lead operation and maintenance role of the University’s Water Filtration Plant, including responsibilities associated with direct operation and maintenance of the water filtration plant.

OBJECTIVE/PURPOSE:

The Water Technician is mainly responsible for operations dealing with all aspects of metering water, recording and maintaining flow data as well as routine maintenance of the supply pumping status.  The Technician must have the technical skills and physical capabilities necessary to deal with the daily operation of the Water Division.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

The Water Technician works under the direction of the Water System’s Chief Operator or Assistant Chief Operator.  Many of the Technician’s duties are routine in nature and are carried out without direct supervision.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED:

The Water Technician may exercise supervision over other division employees for such purposes as instructing proper methods and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (NOT ALL INCLUSIVE):

•           Actively participates in the performance of routine daily checks and recording of water supply pumping stations and all other flow data as necessary

•           Assists in the changing of chlorine injection supply tanks.

•           Assists with regular maintenance as needed in the water supply pumping stations.

•           Responsible for all aspects of water metering such as meter reading, repairs and tests.

•           Responsible for taking all required State samples

•           Generates reports and daily logs as directed.

•           Checks various citizen requests/complaints as assigned.

•           May perform, upon request, all duties of a Maintenance Worker I, II and III.

•           Participates in emergency repairs of all aspects of the distribution system.

•           Assists in maintenance of all materials, apparatus and equipment used by the Water Division.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

•           Proven knowledge and physical capabilities to perform all duties of Maintenance Worker I, II and III.

•           Ability to perform strenuous activities and to walk and stand a majority of the working hours.

•           Proven knowledge of the full range of functions performed by the division.

•           Must have knowledge of the layout of the streets. 

•           Ability to read and interpret maps used to locate mains, curbs, valves, hydrants, etc.

•           Must have good mechanical aptitude.

•           Ability to keep accurate records and generate reports as required.

•           Must have a knowledge of water pump station operations, or the ability to quickly learn these operations.

•           Knowledge of job safety and safe operational procedures for construction functions.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Deputy Water Superintendent is second in command of the Water Department and in the absence of the Superintendent, assumes the complete responsibility of the Water Department. This is a technical administrative position involving the exercise of authority delegated by the Superintendent.
